Who were the Ancient Egyptians?
The first Egyptians were farmers who settled near to the River Nile about 8000 years ago, that is around 6000BC.
They lived along the banks of the River Nile because the river provided plenty of fresh water for the crops, animals and themselves.
Although Egypt was mainly sandy desert, the land near the River Nile was very good for farming because of the water from the Nile and the important yearly floods.
Over the years, the population (number of Egyptians) grew until they became one of the most powerful countries in the world at that time.
The Egyptians became very rich mainly because of the excellent farming and the crops they were able to trade.
They were skilled in many other areas such as mathematics and building and were able to build huge temples, tombs and pyramids.
